Liberty Belles earn awards at summer camp

Liberty Belles

(Posted: July 1, 2010) The Liberty Belles, the drill team of Liberty Hill High School, recently earned a Superior rating at summer drill team camp. The team prepared a pom routine to ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man" and received a Superior ribbon. The Liberty Belles had four dance sessions during camp and learned a jazz, pom, a chair and a lyrical/or another jazz routine during the three-day camp. They performed the chair routine to "Hit the Road Jack" and were awarded Superior and Excellent ribbons. On the final day of the camp, the Belles performed a routine they learned at the camp and received a trophy for Superior rating.
The Liberty Belles were able to participate in the camp due to the generosity of Liberty Hill residents who made contributions to the group's Fill the Boot fundraiser.

One of the five service academies, the USMMA is located in Kings Point, NY, and was established to ensure that the nation would have trained officers and businessmen to maintain a leading edge in the maritime and transportation industries.

Michael will play NCAA basketball for the KP Mariners and upon graduation will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, a merchant marine license, and an appointment as a commissioned officer on reserve or active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. He is the son of Tom and Carolyn Farace of Liberty Hill.

Five Liberty Hill seventh grade students recently participated in the Duke University Talent Identification Program and scored at the average or higher than high school juniors and seniors on the SAT or ACT college entrance exams.

Logan Hageman and Kaitlyn Conner scored high enough to qualify for Grand Recognition. They scored at or better than 90 percent of high school juniors or seniors who tested. These students are invited to a special recognition ceremony to be held at Duke University. Only 3 percent of all of the participants in the 16-state region qualified at this level.

Liberty Hill students who qualified for State Recognition are Kelly McKinzey, Veronica Supulski and Jake Martin. They earned this award by scoring at or above the national average of high school juniors or seniors. These students will be invited to a special recognition ceremony to be held at a university in the state of Texas later this spring.

The Duke University program was founded in 1980 and is dedicated to the cultivation and education of talented youth. Now in its 30th year, Duke TIP’s 7th Grade Talent Search identifies academically promising 7th graders based on standardized test scores achieved while attending elementary or middle school. Candidates who earned a perfect score on one of their TAKS tests were invited to take the SAT or ACT as 7th graders.

"This is quite an achievement and we are very proud of these students," said Liberty Hill Junior High School Principal Chad Pirtle.

Pirtle introduced the students to the LHISD School Board Monday where they were recognized for their achievements.

LHHS Seniors learn business fundamentals

while raising money for charity

(Posted: April 12, 2010)
Liberty Hill High School teachers and staff lined the hallways one day recently waiting to buy lunch from students who opened a one-day lunch counter as a project for economic class. For a $5 donation to the March of Dimes, school employees got a break from the routine and enjoyed homemade Mexican food.

Economics teacher David Runnels said it was all about teaching students how to start and run a business, and the beneficiary was the March of Dimes -- a charity that seeks to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.

Shin Oaks common in The Hill

Vasey Shin Oak

Liberty Hill, Texas, is located on what was once known as the Shin Oak Ridge for the prominence of Shin Oak trees that grow here.

Vasey Shin Oak leavesThe Vasey Shin Oak, which is prominent in the Liberty Hill area, is drought tolerant and grows individually or in clumps in semi-arid grassland on limestone or igneous soils. It has semi-evergreen, glossy lobed leaves and acorns up to 0.9 inches, and the bark is lighter in color than a Live Oak. When the tree grows individually, it generally does not grow taller than 30 feet. In Liberty Hill, it is more common to see the Shin Oak growing as a large shrub in thickets. The Shin Oak is lightly grazed by cattle, sheep, goats and white-tailed deer. In fact, the thickets provide escape and thermal cover for deer.
